Dr. Peter Winsor

Dr. Peter Winsor is a distinguished oceanographer and climate scientist with over 30 years of experience in research and conservation. Born on the west coast of Sweden, he developed a passion for nature and outdoor adventures from an early age. Dr. Winsor completed his Ph.D. in Sweden on Arctic sea ice and oceanography before moving to the United States in 2002 to work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) where he also taught at the MIT-WHOI Joint Program.

In 2008, he relocated to Alaska to establish a lab at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks (UAF), where he focused his research on ecosystem function and the impacts of climate change on marine and coastal environments. Dr. Winsor has published over 50 articles and book chapters in leading international journals and has served on advisory boards for the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He was also involved in UN climate negotiations with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Peter served as the Director of the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Arctic Program, based out of Ottawa, Canada, and most recently joined Cuenca Los Ojos as their Conservation Director, working on rewilding one of North America’s most important landscapes in Sonora, Mexico.

Peter has been active in the outdoor industry, including major expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctica, and across Alaska. In 2022, he started Alaska Guiding, a family-owned guiding company specializing in wilderness trips to remote areas in Alaska with a keen eye on conservation. He is an avid photographer and film maker with interest in documenting conservation and wildlife and has worked with various multimedia formats including field recordings of soundscapes. In his spare time, he enjoys caving, climbing, canyoneering, backcountry skiing, hiking, packrafting, fly fishing, and exploring wild places. Peter now resides by the Gila Wilderness in Silver City, NM.
